Steve Borg will not be part of the Ħamrun Spartans next season as the veteran defender was not offered a new contract by the Malta champions.
The announcement was made by president Joseph Portelli during the club’s annual general meeting that was held on Thursday evening.
The 37-year-old has been with Ħamrun Spartans since January 2022, when he moved to the club from Gżira United.
The Malta international has enjoyed a highly successful spell with the Spartans as he helped the club to three league titles and two Super Cup honours.
Last season, Borg struggled with injury and was sidelined for a few months, managing 11 appearances for the club, but missed the final games of the season.
Last season’s title success was Borg’s eighth Premier League success and continued to boost his list of honours, which also includes three FA Trophy successes and eight Super Cup winners’ medals.
The Spartans are looking to rejuvenate their squad under the charge of new coach Giacomo Modica and are thought to be planning to bring some young blood to the squad as they look to challenge not only in the domestic sphere but also try and go far in the qualifying matches of the UEFA club competitions this summer.
