Argentine-born midfielder to join squad for two-week training camp in Italy
Ħamrun Spartans have strengthened their squad with the signing of Argentine-born midfielder Matias Garcia, the Times of Malta can confirm.
The Spartans are currently working hard to finalise their squad for coach Giacomo Modica who has already started the team’s pre-season preparations.
The Spartans have been scouring the market for a hard-working midfielder and have identified Garcia as the perfect signing to strengthen their midfield department.
Garcia, who holds a Maltese passport and has been part of the national team selection, has parted ways with his former club Floriana, after his contract was not renewed.
On Sunday night, Garcia bid farewell to his former club Floriana and thanked the Greens for several memorable years at the club.
“It’s not easy to put into words everything I feel, but the first thing I want to say is Thank you,” Garcia wrote on his facebook page.
“Today, it’s time for me to say goodbye to Floriana, a club that has been my home for the past six years.
“During this time, I experienced incredible moments that I’ll never forget – we won the league, the cup, and above all, I shared unique memories with people who became part of my life.
“Thank you to everyone who believed in me, supported me, and pushed me to be better. To my teammates, the coaching staff, the board of directors, every club worker, and of course, the fans: thank you for making me feel like part of this family from day one.
“I leave with a full heart, proud to have worn these colours and grateful for every experience along the way.
“Forever grateful – goodbye, Floriana!”
Garcia took little time to find a new club as Ħamrun Spartans immediately entered the race for his signature and over the weekend they agreed on personal terms with the 28-year-old, who is already available to join his new team-mates.
On Monday, the hard-working midfielder will join the Spartans squad, who will leave the islands and head to Italy for a two-week training camp to prepare in the best possible way for the UEFA Champions League qualifiers.
The Spartans will discover their opponents on Tuesday and the club’s top hierarchy of president Joseph Portelli, CEO Marcel Bonnici and his right-hand man Eric Saliba will be heading to Switzerland to attend the draw of Europe’s most prestigious club competition.
