Valletta FC to unveil NextGen project to invest in elite youth development

Valletta FC are expected to launch a wide-ranging youth development project – Gen V – aimed at building a long-term structure to produce elite Maltese footballers while strengthening the club’s identity and technical foundations, the Times of Malta can reveal.

The idea was initially launched during the first of a series of meetings for Academy parents and players and the initial feedback was very positive.

Gen V is being designed to provide a clear, merit-based pathway for players aged 14 to 21, supported by a full ecosystem of coaching, specialisation, education, and high-level competitive exposure.

As part of the initiative, Valletta FC will be appointing a high-profile coach with international experience in elite youth set-ups to lead the technical side of the programme.

Club officials told the Times of Malta that this move is intended to ensure the project is aligned with best practice models used by top European academies, leveraging the experience of a top-level coach who has developed similar projects elsewhere.

Introducing this programme, Valletta FC president Claudio Grech told the Times of Malta that this is not a short-term fix but a complete shift in how the club is planning to build its football future.

“We are nurturing talent and we are doing it the Valletta way – with passion, identity, discipline, and ambition to succeed,” Grech said.

Gen V – short for Generation Valletta – is an integral part of the club’s competitive teams’ structure through which player selection will be based on merit, growth potential, and regular evaluation.

Behaviour, attitude, and commitment will be considered as critical as technical ability in the programme.

As part of the programme, the club is also planning to host high-profile international youth tournaments as the upcoming season, designed to attract scouts and clubs from abroad to give Gen V players greater exposure to professional opportunities outside Malta.

Grech has made it clear that the programme is intended to complement the work done by the Malta FA over recent years in strengthening youth football structures.

“We recognise the enormous value of the systems and investment put in place by the MFA,” he added.

“Gen V will work alongside that framework – our goal is to build additional layers of opportunity for our players, particularly those with international aspirations.”

The club also reaffirmed its goal for Gen V to become a key feeder into the Malta national team, with officials citing national contribution as a core component of the programme’s long-term mission, instilling a strong sense of national pride in the developing youths.

Each player in the Gen V system will be assigned a personal mentor from the senior squad, while benefitting from academic support, stipend allowance for those still in formal education, medical coverage, and structured personalised training monitored through technology and performance analytics.

In order to assist the players in international opportunities, the club’s digital team will also be curating technical profiles of all Gen V players regularly across Valletta FC’s platforms, highlighting their development and progress through the system.

With this project, framed in the wider transformation project, Valletta FC signals a clear shift toward sustainable, identity-driven football – attracting the best Maltese players with ambition and providing them with the necessary structure to support them in making the international grade.
