Watch: Athletics Malta fifth after opening day of European Team Championships

Gina McNamara celebrates her win in the 800m race.

Malta completed its commitments at the end of Day 1 of the European Athletics Team Championships in Maribor, Slovenia, in fifth place.

Despite missing some of its top performers, the team displayed great resilience and talent, with notable performances across both track and field events, including contributions from several promising young athletes.

Among the stand-out performers was Rachela Pace, who delivered maximum points for Malta with a long jump victory, recording a remarkable 6.39m.

Gina McNamara delivered again after her GSSE success by clinching first place in the 800m with a time of 2:10.05, while Matthew Galea Soler earned a well-deserved second place in the 400m, finishing with an impressive 46.90s.

Both athletes will be back in action on Wednesday, hoping to add more points for Team Malta.

The women’s relay team also delivered another strong performance, securing third place with a solid 46.99-second performance.

With a total of 184 points, Malta is currently in fifth place, matching the team’s performance from two years ago in Poland.

Iceland and Luxembourg lead the standings after Day 1, with Moldova following closely in third place with 194 points.

The event will conclude with the second and final day of competition on Wednesday in Maribor, with Malta looking to build on this strong start.
