Mireya Bugeja and Isaac Bonnici set new national youth records at the University Games, currently being held in Rhine-Ruhr, Germany.

Bugeja produced a strong performance in the 1,500 metres race when she completed the distance in a time of four minutes 26.85 seconds.

The young Maltese runner finished in 11th place in a race that featured athletes.

Bugeja’s time was 0.20 seconds faster than her previous best, which she had set in a Challenge 1 meeting held at the Matthew Micallef St John racetrack in Marsa.

Bugeja’s timing set a new national record in the U-20 and U-23 categories.

On the other hand, Isaac Bonnici was in action in the 800 metres heat.

Bonnici was in action in the second heat and completed the two-lap race in a time of one minute 52.03 seconds to finish seventh in the race.

Bonnici’s effort saw him lower his national record in the U-20 and U-23 categories by 0.38 seconds.

The Rush Athletics Club runner had set the previous best last March when stopping the clock in one minute 52.41 seconds.
