The Malta Golf Association, together with the Royal Malta Golf Club, announced that Malta has been chosen to host the European Team Shield Championships in 2026.
The championships fall under the umbrella of the European Golf Association and is organised for small and emerging golfing nations not competing in the Division 1 or 2 of the European Amateur Team Championships that year.
The first edition of the men’s tournament was held in 2015 and that for the women the following year.
Malta has fielded a men’s team for all editions of the tournament, winning four bronze and four silver medals.
A women’s team was fielded for the first time in 2024, with the team placing fifth then and fourth this year.
Four players, from each of the men’s and women’s teams, compete over four days, beginning with 18 holes of stroke play qualifying, followed by three days of match play knock-out rounds, each consisting of one foursomes and two singles matches.
This is an amazing opportunity handed down to Malta by the European Golf Association.
It represents the first major golf tournament that will be held at Royal Malta and is due to the good relations and mutual respect that the local golf community has with the European Golf Association and its affiliated member countries.
