Matthew Galea Soler breezed into the semi-finals of the 400m while Isaac Bonnici set a new national record in the U-20 and U-23 categories in the 800 metres at the European Athletics U-20 Championships that are currently being held in Tampere, Finland.
Galea Soler has been in fine form this summer.
After his excellent performances for Malta at the Games of the Small States of Europe, he kept up his momentum, lowering his national record in the 400 metres twice at the University Games held in Germany last month.
On Thursday, the Maltese sprinter confirmed his fine form when he managed to reach the semi-finals of the 400 metres event with an impressive display.
Competing in the sixth heat on a wet surface, Galea Soler managed to storm home in second place in a time of 47.72 seconds, finishing just behind Ondrej Loupal, of the Czech Republic, who clocked 46.76, and ahead of Biel Cirujeda, of Spain, who stopped the clock on 48.15.
On the other hand, Isaac Bonnici was in action in the 800 metres heats.
The young runner completed the distance in a time of 1:51.97 to finish in seventh place in the heat.
For Bonnici, his effort in Tampere meant that he set a new national standard in both the U-20 and U-23 age categories.
Britain’s William Sean Rabjohns won the race in 1:49.01 ahead of Polish runner Bartlomiej Kisiel in 1:50.10.
