The first silverware of the 2025-26 domestic women’s season will be up for grabs on Sunday as Swieqi United and Mġarr United cross paths in the Assikura Women’s Super Cup at the Centenary Stadium (kick-off: 6pm).
Swieqi, the reigning league champions, will be aiming to retain the trophy after last year’s triumph over Birkirkara.
Dorianne Theuma’s side enter this tie on the back of an emphatic 8-1 win against San Ġwann, with new signing Salamatu Abdulai, former Ghana U20 international, hitting a hat-trick.
The Owls were also active in the transfer market, bolstering their squad with the arrivals of Valentina Rapa, Bulgarian international Aleksandra Yaneva, and Maltese forward Sara Saliba, formerly of Pomigliano and Milan.
Their season had kicked off early with a UEFA Women’s Champions League campaign, where they claimed a win over Moldova’s Anenii Noi before bowing out against Slovakia’s Spartak Myjava.
Mġarr, meanwhile, are eyeing their first-ever Super Cup success, having earned their place in the competition after lifting the domestic cup – their maiden trophy in women’s football.
The Greens made a statement in their opening league fixture by defeating Swieqi 2-0, courtesy of goals from their dynamic attacking duo Josline N’Guessan and Valeria Villegas.
French striker N’Guessan, a summer addition, has hit the ground running with goals in her first two matches, while Villegas, one of last season’s standout performers, underlined her importance with a brace in last week’s 5-0 win over Valletta.
Last season, encounters between Swieqi and Mġarr proved finely balanced, with each side registering two wins apiece and the other two clashes ending in stalemates.
LIST OF WINNERS
