Professional duo Abdala and Menendez prevail in men’s tournament
The United Padel Club recently hosted the Evian Malta Padel Open at Padel Malta’s courts in Pembroke.
The tournament, which is sanctioned by the Malta Tennis and Padel Federation, is one of four official tournaments that are organised on our islands this year.
Malta’s top players all registered to take part in the tournament, which saw 100 fans watch the competition’s finals.
In the men’s tournament, there were no major surprises as the final was contested by the main favourites for the title.
Spanish-Argentine duo Elian Abdala and Jaime Menendez, who are both professional padel players, proved too strong for Santi Antonaya Labrador and Ivan Menchaca.
Abdala and Menendez prevailed in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, to finish the tournament without dropping a set.
In the women’s competition, former Maltese tennis champion Elaine Genovese teamed up with her Spanish partner Angela Martinez and produced a very strong performance in the final.
Genovese and Martinez were up against Barbara Fenech and Tamara Krmpotic for the title.
Fenech and Krmpotic put on a strong fight in the first set as they forced a tie-break but Genovese and Martinez came out on top.
In the second set, Genovese and Martinez stepped up a gear to stroll to a 7-6 6-2 victory.
At the end of the tournament, a prize giving ceremony was held with Jan Karl Farrugia, secretary of the Malta Tennis and Padel Federation, presenting the medals and trophies to the winners.
The tournament was held thanks to the support of sponsors Evian, Bolt, Lavazza, The Notebook Centre, Zest, Francis Busuttil and Sons among others.
