Marmeleyo, Pereyro take honours at FIP Bronze Pragmatic Play Open Malta

The tournament attracted 34 male couples and 16 female pairings who registered for the competition at the Padel Malta courts.

The Union Padel Club recently successfully hosted the first-ever sanctioned international tournament, the FIP Bronze Pragmatic Play Open Malta, at Padel Malta.

The tournament attracted 34 male couples and 16 female pairings who registered for the competition.

Among the entries for the tournament was the world no. 94 player, who, up to a few years ago, was also ranked in the world’s top ten.

On the other hand, the women’s tournament featured the women’s world no. 49.

The Padel Malta team transformed the club premises into a top-tier venue, with players handed all possible comforts during the duration of the tournament.

The tournament was played over four days and provided high-quality action.

The male final was contested by the Spanish/Argentine duo of Jose Solano Marmelejo and Ramiro Pereyra against the Italian/Spanish pair of Fino and Font.

The first set was a hard-fought affair and went to a tie-break, but the first-seeded couple of Solano Marmelejo/Pereyra from Spain and Argentina managed to hold it together and prevailed.

The second set saw Solano Marmelejo and Pereyra imposing their superiority to clinch it 6-1 and the match 2-0.

The female final also saw a tight first set, but the Spanish favourites Julia Polo Bautista and Marina Lobo showed class and experience, winning the final against Dutch player Liza Groenveld and Constanca Gorito from the Netherlands in impressive fashion as they prevailed 6-1 6-1.

The tournament also welcomed a high-profile guest, Martin Di Nenno, who came to watch his girlfriend competing in the women’s tournament.

Prize ceremony was hosted by club owners Janika and Karl Wijkmark, supported by the president of the Malta Tennis and Padel Federation, Marc Gingell Littlejohn.

In a statement, the organisers expressed gratitude to the main sponsor Pragmatic Play, VisitMalta, and Lidion Bank for their support.
