Chile secure penultimate spot at men’s 2027 Rugby World Cup

Chile punched their ticket to the men’s 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia on Saturday with a play-off win over Samoa.

After a 32-32 draw last week in the United States, Chile won the return leg 31-12 at home in Vina del Mar to qualify for a second straight tournament.

They lost all four of their group matches on their World Cup debut in France two years ago, including a defeat by Samoa.

Samoa, who have appeared at every World Cup since 1991, could still claim the final spot if they win a four-team qualifying event in Dubai in November.

They will compete with Belgium, Namibia and Brazil or Paraguay for the last of 24 places at the World Cup, which is being expanded from 20 teams.
