Mġarr United women maintained their flawless start to the Assikura Women’s League season, making it seven wins from seven matches.
The Greens eased past Valletta with a commanding performance, moving up to 21 points and preserving their six-point cushion over both Swieqi United and Hibernians.
French forward Josline N’Guessan continued her impressive form, netting a hat-trick to further cement her status as one of Mġarr’s standout players. Paula Ciappara, one of the club’s new signings, was also on the scoresheet.
Both Swieqi United and Hibernians secured victories over the weekend to keep pace at the top.
Hibernians defeated Birkirkara 4-1, with Sylivia Kabene adding to her prolific run – scoring her fifth goal in two matches. The Paolites also handed a debut to Zambia international Misozu Zulu, while Birkirkara gave a league debut to Ghanaian defender Selina Anima.

Meanwhile, Swieqi United comfortably overcame San Ġwann, inspired by Sara Saliba’s four-goal haul. For San Ġwann, Martina Fanega found the net once again, taking her tally to three goals this season.

Top three eye winning continuity
The Assikura Women’s League will now pause to make way for international duty, as the Malta women’s national team prepares for a double-header friendly against Belarus. The U19 and U17 selections will also be in action during this international window.
When the league resumes for Matchday 8, leaders Mġarr United will take on San Ġwann as they aim to extend their perfect run to eight consecutive victories.
Ryan Vella’s side has been outstanding so far, combining solid defensive organisation with attacking efficiency. Their tactical discipline and relentless work rate have been key to maintaining their 100% record.
For San Ġwann, still on a single point, this will be another difficult challenge as they continue to search for form.
In the chasing pack, Swieqi United – currently second – face Birkirkara as they look to keep the pressure on the Greens. Last season’s champions, led by the prolific duo Sara Saliba and Salamatu Abdulai, will start as clear favourites against a Birkirkara side that has struggled for consistency and appears unlikely to mount a title challenge this term. The Stripes sit fourth on nine points, following a 4-1 defeat to Hibernians.
Meanwhile, Hibernians – also level on points with Swieqi – will take on Valletta, another side with just one point. The Paolites will be eager to secure another victory to keep the heat on Mġarr at the top of the standings.
