Maltese ultra-endurance athlete Fabio Spiteri is set to take on his third Deca UltraTriathlon, one of the most demanding endurance challenges in the world.
Spiteri’s undertaking forms part of Project 100, his ongoing initiative to raise €100,000 for animal shelters across Malta and Gozo.
Funds donated will be allocated to the purchase of food and medical supplies for shelters currently in need. He is now just €25,000 away from reaching his target.
The Deca UltraTriathlon covers an astonishing 2,260
kilometres – the equivalent of ten full long-distance triathlons completed consecutively.
Competitors must swim 38 kilometres, cycle 1,800 kilometres, and run 422 kilometres (ten marathons) in a single continuous effort.
This remarkable attempt follows Spiteri’s successful completion of the Bretzel Ultra Triathlon Deca in Colmar, France, earlier this June, where he placed second overall and shattered his own national record over the distance by an incredible 31 hours, finishing in 233 hours, 10 minutes, and 25 seconds.
In an extraordinary display of resilience and determination, Spiteri will now race the full distance for the third time within a year, joining around 30 elite athletes from around the world in Taiwan.
The event begins on November 9 and marks the first time a Deca UltraTriathlon is being held in Asia as part of the International Ultra Triathlon Association Grand Prix series.
November brings ideal racing conditions in Taiwan, offering mild temperatures between 15–24°C, low rainfall, and generally favourable weather for ultra-distance sport.
“I hope that the Taiwan Deca will be the final push needed to reach this goal,” said Spiteri.
Sacrifice
“A huge amount of commitment and sacrifice has gone into these triathlons, and I sincerely hope it encourages people to donate.
“Every contribution counts. Malta is full of generous animal lovers, and their support has made a real difference in the past.”
Spiteri also expressed his gratitude to the sponsors who have supported him from the very beginning, including Royal Canin Malta, Cisk 0.0, Epic, and Garmin Malta.
