Canada-Finland women’s ice hockey game postponed after virus outbreak

The women’s ice hockey game at the Winter Olympics between defending champions Canada and Finland on Thursday has been postponed after Finnish players fell ill with norovirus, organisers announced.

“The decision was taken following consultations with medical professionals after cases of norovirus were identified within Team Finland,” the Milano Cortina 2026 Organising Committee said in a statement.

“It was made collectively and in accordance with established health and safety principles, with the health and wellbeing of players, team staff, officials and all tournament participants as the highest priority.”

According to Italian media four Finnish players have contracted the virus, a form of gastroenteritis, which causes vomiting and diarrhoea and is highly contagious.

All training and media engagements have been cancelled as a precaution.

The infected athletes and their roommates have been isolated, and all areas have been disinfected.

The Group A preliminary round game has been rescheduled for Thursday, February 12 at Milano Rho Ice Hockey Arena.

Canada won a fifth Olympic women’s title in Beijing four years ago while Finland have taken bronze in the last two Winter Games.

The United States, the Czech Republic and Switzerland are also in Group A.
