Hibernians FC announced that they have parted ways with head coach Branko Nisevic and appointed his assistant Andrei Agius as the new man at the helm.
The decision to part ways with Nisevic came just a day after the Paolites crashed out of the FA Trophy following a 3-2 defeat to Gżira United.
That upset was the club’s fourth successive defeat in a row in all competitions and the club felt that a change in leadership had to be made.
“Hibernians Football Club announces that, following cordial discussions, the Club and Head Coach Branko Nisevic have reached a mutual agreement to terminate the employment contract between them,” the Premier League club said in a statement.
“The club wishes to thank Mr. Nisevic for his work, commitment, and professionalism during his time at Hibernians FC and extends its best wishes to him for the future.
“Hibernians Football Club is also pleased to confirm the appointment of Andrei Agius as the new Head Coach.
“He will be assisted by Igor Bubnjić, who has formed part of the club’s technical team since November.
“The Club looks forward to this new chapter and remains fully focused on achieving its sporting objectives.”
Agius has a challenging job on his hands to put Hibernians back in the running for a Top 6 berth.
The Paolites are currently ninth in the standings on 10 points two points adrift of Valletta and Sliema but there are seven teams who are vying for four spots in the Top 6.
Agius is expected to make his debut as Hibernians head coach on Saturday when they face Valletta.
