DJ Spritz won Sunday’s much-awaited EquestriMalta President’s Cup, open for class Premier trotters as the ninth and tenth meetings of the season were held during the weekend at the Marsa Racetrack.
These meetings included 19 races all for trotters on various distances. The much-awaited final, held on a short distance of 2,140 metres, saw young Gozitan driver Daniel Hili steer favourite, DJ Spritz, to victory.
Twelve trotters took part in the President’s Cup final.
As expected, DJ Spritz (Daniel Hili) was the fastest horse at first, opening a small lead from Diablo D’Herfraie (Jesmar Gafa’) and Rampant (Cherise Farrugia).
With 500 metres to go, DJ Spritz was still going strong and managed to pass the finishing post easily by a length and a half from Diablo D’Herfraie and Extra Du Chatelet (Ludvic Ghigo).
Zinfandel (Charles Camilleri) ended in fourth place from Eldorado De Ver (Noel Baldacchino).
The winner clocked an impressive average time of 1.12.1” per kilometer and for this Italian trotter this was its fourth win in a row and in Malta.
At the end of this final, Acting President Helena Dalli presented the President’s Cup to Daniel Hili and Michael Camilleri, the driver and the owner, respectively, of the winning horse.
For Hili this was also his first win in a major final.
Present for the occasion there were also officials from EquestriMalta, Malta Equidrome and Malta Racing Club.
The programme included also three races with ponies driven by children. These were won by Il Lullu (Sven Caruana), Flash (Matthias Bezzina) and Cio (Shazney Abela).
Another meeting at the Marsa Racetrack will be held on Sunday. The first race should start at 1.30pm.
