Chris Cardona confirms his interest in forming part of Birkirkara FC committee

Dr Chris Cardona has confirmed that he has been approached by a number of members of Birkirkara FC who invited him to form part of the club’s administration and is keen to take this challenge.

The Stripes have endured a very disappointing 2025-26 season as the four-time Malta champions have failed to challenge for the major domestic honours.

Birkirkara have missed out on a place in the Top Six of the Closing Round of the YoHealth Malta Premier League while they were knocked out of the FA Trophy following a 3-1 defeat to Valletta in the semi-finals.

Sources close to the club told Times of Malta that The Stripes’ disappointing campaign has seen an increasing call for change from the team’s fans to the club’s top hierarchy, and Dr Cardona confirmed that he is ready to step in and help the club.

“Yes, I can confirm that I am keen to contribute to the future of Birkirkara FC,” Dr Cardona said.

“I have been a member of Birkirkara FC for many years, to be precise, before the appointment of Victor Zammit as club president,” Dr Cardona said.

“I am a Birkirkara man through and through and have been supporting the team since my childhood. I was there when the club won the FA Trophy for the first time and the league championship.

“During my time in politics, I couldn’t involve myself in football administration and be part of the club committee. But now it has been several years since I was a politician, and I feel the time is right to get involved.

“In the past few weeks, a huge number of Birkirkara fans approached me and asked me to put my name forward and form part of the club committee. I have accepted their invitation, and in the past weeks, I have compiled a long list of people that I have contacted to be part of my team.

“The list includes people who are part of the current committee or were part of the administration in the past, and also people who have never been involved in football.

“Added to that in the past weeks, I held several meetings with several persons who are currently involved in the club in various areas to share my ideas, including the current president, Michael Valenzia, and the club’s vice-presidents.

“My only aim is to get involved and help the club restore its place among the best teams on the island.”

Dr Cardona has been out of the political scene since 2020, when he stepped down as Labour Party Deputy Leader.

Michael Valenzia has been acting as president of Birkirkara FC since 2021 after he succeeded Frank Zarb. In 2024, Valenzia was reconfirmed as president for a three-year term.

Birkirkara FC is set to hold an Extraordinary General Meeting next week; however, no elections are on the agenda, and it is expected that the club’s top hierarchy will discuss with the members their plans for the future.
