Malta set to host historic European Aquatics Champions League Final Four showcase

Malta is set to become the centre of European water polo next as it hosts the 2026 European Aquatics Champions League Final Four tournaments for both men and women.

Bringing together eight of Europe’s leading clubs, the event represents one of the most prestigious competitions in the international water polo calendar and further reinforces Malta’s reputation as a destination capable of delivering major international sporting events.

The event will be hosted at the National Pool Complex in Msida, the aquatic home of SportMalta.

For the first time in the history of this prestigious competition, the men’s and women’s Champions League Final Fours will be held at the same venue and during the same week.

This is another confirmation of the trust given by European Aquatics to the local organising committee.

The event will welcome athletes, coaches, officials, media representatives, and supporters from across the world, creating a unique platform that celebrates excellence within the sport and showcases the highest level of club water polo.

Will there be a Hungarian triple?

The men’s Final Four will feature four clubs that have consistently demonstrated excellence throughout the European season: Pro Recco (Italy), back-to-back champions FTC Telekom (Hungary), Olympiacos (Greece), and Zodiac CN Atlètic-Barceloneta (Spain).

The Italians will make a return to final 4 following the final lost in 2024.

Same fortune for the Greeks. The red and white team famous for their support lost in the semis two years ago. For the Spanish, this is their second consecutive Final 4, winning the bronze last year.

Each team has successfully navigated a demanding qualification pathway to reach the final stage of the competition. Their presence reflects not only the strength of their domestic programmes but also their ability to perform consistently against Europe’s strongest opposition.

Will there be a Spanish domain ?

Alongside the men’s tournament, the Women’s Champions League Final Four will highlight the continued growth and professional development of women’s water polo across Europe.

Competing for the continental title are Olympiacos SFP (Greece) who eliminated in the quarterfinals the six-time European champions Sabadell, last year’s champions CN Sant Andreu (Spain), Assolim CN MatarĂ³ (Spain), and FTC Telekom Water polo (Hungary).

Each club has demonstrated exceptional consistency throughout the season and arrives in Malta with genuine ambitions of lifting the European crown following a hard-fought final 8.

Defending champions Sant Andreu return determined to retain their title, while Olympiacos continues to be recognised as one of the leading forces within European women’s water polo.

MatarĂ³â€™s progression reflects the strength and depth of Spanish water polo, while FTC’s presence highlights the continued development of Hungarian excellence within the women’s game.

Creating a festival atmosphere beyond the competition

While the primary focus remains the delivery of world-class water polo, the 2026 European Aquatics Champions League Final Four has been designed as a complete sporting and entertainment experience for athletes, supporters, families, and visitors.

A dedicated Fan Zone will operate throughout the event, providing an interactive environment for spectators of all ages. The area will feature family-friendly activities, interactive games, and sponsor activations, and entertainment opportunities aimed at enhancing the overall event experience.

Official merchandise outlets will also be available, allowing supporters to purchase event memorabilia and club merchandise while engaging with the wider water polo community.

Complementing the sporting programme will be a dedicated entertainment schedule running alongside the tournament. These activities have been carefully planned to create a vibrant festival atmosphere that celebrates both elite sport and the culture of water polo, ensuring visitors enjoy a memorable experience both inside and outside the field of play.

Accessibility and spectator experience

To improve accessibility, safety, and the overall spectator experience, the area surrounding the National Pool Complex will operate as a designated car-free zone throughout the event.

Convenient parking facilities will be available only a short walking distance from the venue, including designated parking areas at the University of Malta football ground and athletics track. The proximity of these facilities will ensure efficient access for spectators while maintaining a safe and pedestrian-friendly environment around the competition venue.

Bringing European water polo to a global audience

The Champions League Final Four will receive extensive media coverage through both national and international broadcasting platforms. Matches will be televised across multiple territories, providing clubs, athletes, and sponsors with significant exposure while allowing supporters from around the world to follow the action live.

This extensive coverage further strengthens the event’s position as one of the premier competitions within the international water polo calendar and provides an opportunity to showcase Malta as a leading host nation for elite sporting events. TVM Sport will be the local broadcaster who with an 8-camera set up will transmit all the games and aired in various countries.

Opening Ceremony celebrating Malta’s heritage

The opening ceremony will serve as a celebration of both European water polo and Maltese identity. Designed to showcase Malta’s rich cultural and historical heritage, the ceremony will feature visual elements inspired by some of the country’s most iconic landmarks and historic locations.

One of the ceremony’s key highlights will be the symbolic journey of the Champions League trophies across Malta. National team players will participate in a ceremonial relay, passing the trophies from one location to another while visiting a number of significant sites around the islands.

The journey will symbolise the connection between Malta’s proud water polo tradition and the pinnacle of European club competition, ultimately culminating at the National Pool Complex, where the trophies will arrive ahead of the opening matches.

Strategic significance for Maltese water polo

The awarding of both Champions League Final Four events to Malta represents an important milestone for the local sporting landscape. It reflects confidence in the country’s organisational capabilities, sporting infrastructure, and long-standing relationship with aquatic sports.

Water polo occupies a unique position within Maltese sport, with a strong domestic culture and passionate supporter base. Hosting Europe’s premier club competition provides an opportunity

to further strengthen the sport’s profile while creating valuable exposure for local athletes, coaches, administrators, and volunteers.

The event also presents a significant developmental opportunity, allowing young players and coaches to observe world-class athletes and technical staff operating within elite performance environments.

A spectacular conclusion

The event will conclude with a closing ceremony worthy of Europe’s premier club water polo competition. Following the medal presentations and trophy celebrations, spectators will once again be treated to a spectacular fireworks display, continuing a tradition that has become synonymous with major international water polo events hosted in Malta over recent years.

The closing celebrations will provide a fitting conclusion to four days of elite competition, bringing together athletes, officials, volunteers, and supporters in a final celebration of sporting excellence, international friendship, and the enduring spirit of water polo.

SportMalta Cup

For the third consecutive time, the week event will commence on the 8th of June with the SportMalta. The event served in the last year not only as a pre league match but also as a test match for local organisers. Arch-rivals San Giljan and Neptunes who won the cup last year will again contest the event.
