Birkirkara FC are closing in on the permanent signing of lateral defender Aleandro Garzia after they agreed a fee with Floriana on Tuesday.
The Stripes are looking to reset their squad after a disappointing 2025-26 season, which saw the team fail to challenge for any major domestic honour and suffer the ignominy of finishing in the Bottom 6 of the Closing Round.
The club has taken a new direction at the helm after Chris Cardona replaced Michael Valenzia as club president, and the new club administration is doing all they can to bolster their squad so that they can return among the challengers for honours next season.
Coach Paul Zammit has made a list of targets for the club’s top hierarchy, and Garzia was one of the names on top of the list.
The wing-back is coming off an encouraging second part of the 2025-26 season, during which he moved to Birkirkara on loan from Floriana and enjoyed an impressive run of performances with the club.
Garzia’s consistency has earned him a place on Emilio De Leo’s national team, where he played in both the end-of-season friendlies against Slovakia (1-2) and the 2-0 win over Azerbaijan.
Birkirkara opened talks with Floriana to make Garzia’s move permanent but they had to negotiate hard with the Malta champions, who set a high price for the player.
However, in recent days, Floriana’s stance softened, and an agreement for a fee was reached on Tuesday evening.
Now, Garzia is expected to discuss personal terms with Birkirkara, but it’s unlikely to be a problem, and the player is set to seal his move to the Stripes on Wednesday.
