Sliema Wanderers have completed a major transfer coup with the signing of former Arsenal midfielder Denilson.
Club president Keith Perry confirmed to the Times of Malta that the 32-year-old defensive midfielder has agreed to move to the Wanderers on a one-year contract.
Denilson came through the Sao Paolo’s academy before playing for the first team in season 2004-05.
It was here that he attracted the interest of Arsenal who signed the player in August 2006.
With the Gunners, Denilson made 96 appearances and managed to score six goals.
He also represented the English Premier League giants in the UEFA Champions League, where he made 24 appearances and netted one goal.
After leaving Arsenal, Denilson returned to Sao Paolo for two seasons before heading to the Middle East where he was on the books of Al Wahda FC, of the UAE, before returning to his homeland where he played for Cruzeiro and Botafogo.
The signing of Denilson is surely a huge statement of intent for the Wanderers who are looking to bounce back from a disappointing 2019-20 season which saw the Blues fight against relegation.
