Swieqi, Kirkop women to meet in highlight clash

The final matchday of the BOV Women’s League will take place this week with Swieqi United and Kirkop United taking centre stage when they take on each other at the Mġarr Ground, on Tuesday (kick-off: 20.30).

This week’s games won’t be the final ones for this calendar year as the first part of the championship will come to an end next week following Birkirkara’s games against Mtarfa and Kirkop which had to be rescheduled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

For both Swieqi and Kirkop, a win would help them assure themselves of at least a top-three spot before the winter break.

Swieqi are currently third on 13 points after seven games, one point ahead of fourth-placed Kirkop who after six games have collected 12 points. The Reds will recuperate their one game in hand when they meet champions Birkirkara next week.

Under the guidance of coach Keith Gouder, Swieqi will be looking to bounce back from last week’s 2-1 defeat against Birkirkara in order to maintain the pressure on leaders Mġarr and the Stripes themselves, who have two games in hand and should they win both, they would finish as winter champions.

Swieqi have so far scored 20 goals, including four against Kirkop back in the first round clash when a brace from Emma Xuereb and a goal each from Dorianne Theuma and Jade Flask handed them the three points.

Kirkop, on their part, is proving to be one of the most in-form teams of the season with their four wins in six games including last week’s 5-3 thrilling victory over debutants Mtarfa.

Led by coach Jochen Lenders and propelled by the eight goals of forward Rodianne Zerafa, Kirkop are in the driving seat to secure a top-four finish this season.

League leaders Mġarr will be facing Raiders Għargħur in a game that will be played at the Centenary Stadium, on Tuesday (kick-off: 20.30).

Mġarr are at the back of a 9-1 rout of Mosta with Francesca Chircop, who has just recorded her 200th appearance in the top-flight, scoring to remain top scorer of the league with nine goals.

The Greens have the best-offensive record with 27 goals in seven games as they are topping the championship with 16 points.

On the other hand, Raiders have just six points to show for their efforts after six outings. However, Denis Guerra’s team has been one of the most entertaining sides to watch with their meticolous football and the number of youth players starring for them which definitely highlights the progress of this team in just their second year based in Għargħur.

Last week, Raiders strenghtened their squad with the signing of Malta U-17’s goalkeeper Giulia D’Antuono who joined from Mosta. Parting ways with the Għargħur-based side is goalkepeer Dorienne Grech who has put pen to paper on a deal with Mtarfa.

In the first round, Mġarr had emerged winners 3-0 against Raiders.

Elsewhere, Mtarfa and Mosta will face each other in an important clash from the lower part of the championship.

Mtarfa are still looking for their first points of the season but they seem to be finding their feet in their maiden top-flight season after last week’s positive display against Kirkop where they also managed to score three goals in a game for the first time this season.

Meanwhile, Mosta are just above them with three points from seven games, with their only win chalked up in the direct encounter against this week’s opponents in the first round.
