Matthew Guillaumier has been released by Malta champions Ħamrun Spartans and is seeking to continue his career away from our shores, the Times of Malta can confirm.
The Malta international midfielder had been on the books of Ħamrun Spartans for the past three seasons and helped the club to win two Premier League titles and was named MFA Player of the Year in 2021 and at the end of last season.
However, the player has made no secret of his desire of furthering his career away from our shores and negotiations were ongoing with the club administration during the past few weeks so that the player will rescind his contract so he could move to another club.
In fact, Guillaumier has rarely featured for the Spartans during their pre-season preparations and did not take part in the friendly matches they have played so far against the Malta U-19, Balzan and Birkirkara as he was deemed not part of the project for the upcoming season.
Sources have told the Times of Malta that negotiations were finally concluded on Tuesday and the former St Andrews and Birkirkara midfielder is now looking to earn a contract with a foreign team in the coming weeks.
In fact, Gullauimer’s representatives have already started to scour the market for opportunities and it is hoped that he will sort out his future in the coming weeks.
Guillaumier has already had some experiences away from our shores during his career, particularly in Italy, where he joined Empoli on loan from his former club St Andrews in 2014 and then moved to Siena for the second part of the 2021-22 season.
