Haley Bugeja set for San Siro appearance as Inter face Milan in Serie A Femminile on Sunday

Haley Bugeja could be set to become the first Maltese female player to play at the San Siro this weekend after the Italian Football Federation moved Sunday’s Milan derby between her club Inter and Milan at the prestigious football stadium.

The event is set to be a landmark achievement for women’s football in Italy as it is the first time that the Milan derby is played at the Stadio Diuseppe Meazza on Sunday, with kick-off set at 2.30pm.

This will be the second time that a major football stadium in Italy will be hosting a match from the Serie A Femminile as two months ago Juventus hosted Roma at the Allianz Stadium in Turin.

It is the third time that the San Siro will open its doors to host a women’s football match.

The first time a women’s match was played at this stadium was in September 1974 when Italy beat Scotland 3-0.

The most recent match staged at the San Siro was played on October 5, 2020 when Milan hosted Juventus in front of a restricted crowd of 1,000 spectators due to the COVID-19 restrictions.

Sunday’s match will surely be a great experience for Bugeja who is returning to Inter after a positive experience for the national team during the past week’s international window.

Last week, Bugeja converted a penalty as Malta held Hungary in an international friendly at the National Stadium.

The goal scored against the Hungarians was Bugeja’s 21st for the national team, placing her just six goals behind all-time record scorer Dorianne Theuma.
