In life, we all encounter moments that leave a profound mark on us. For one individual, 29-year-old architect Luca Zarb, that moment was the loss of an uncle to cancer in 2018.
Watching a loved one battle illness is never easy, but witnessing the compassion and care provided by Hospice Malta during those moments was both humbling and inspiring.
“This organisation has been a lifeline for countless families, providing palliative care and emotional support to patients and their loved ones. In 2018, I saw firsthand the incredible work Hospice Malta does,” Luca Zarb explained.
Luca’s experience and loss is what brought about the SevenxSeven Campaign – seven marathons (42.2km) over seven days.
Kicking off on December 21, the SevenxSeven Campaign not only demands physical strength but also mental resilience.
Throughout the seven day stretch, Luca will be channeling his energy to bring to the fore Hospice Malta’s tireless work in providing palliative care and making a heartfelt plea to raise €10,000 for Hospice Malta.
“Hospice Malta rely entirely on donations, and I hope this campaign inspires others to give back. So many Maltese families have been affected by cancer. By donating, we can make a real difference,” he said.
Funds raised will contribute to the maintenance of Hospice Malta’s St Michael’s facility in Sta Venera, where specialised care is offered under one roof.
Beyond financial support, the campaign aims to raise awareness about the vital role Hospice Malta plays in the community.
Preparing for the Challenge
Luca has been an active athlete since a young age, but this is the first time he has embarked on such a monumental challenge. Balancing his job, daily life, and rigorous training hours – along with making lifestyle changes around his diet — proved to be the most demanding aspect.
“The toughest part will be maintaining my body. I’ve never done anything this big before,” Luca admitted.
“Proper recovery, nutrition, and mental focus will be key.”
The support of his family, friends, and Hospice Malta has been key to keeping Luca motivated and committed to his goal.
His ultimate objective is to successfully complete the challenge.
“If I must, I will walk. The aim is to stay positive and keep moving, especially during those moments when every step feels painful and increasingly difficult,”he said.
As the start of this challenge draws closer, Luca underscores that this campaign is about far more than completing a physical feat – it’s about bringing hope, spreading kindness, and making a meaningful difference this Christmas.
“I sincerely hope this campaign inspires others to take action in support of Hospice Malta. I’ve chosen to run seven marathons in seven days, and I know I’ll need to stay strong and push through when times get tough. But for those battling cancer, the fight is not a choice. Let’s come together to help make their journey count,”he concluded.
