Injured Bayer Leverkusen striker Victor Boniface will not return for Friday’s Borussia Dortmund clash, while Granit Xhaka is a doubt, coach Xabi Alonso said.
Boniface has not played for the defending German champions since returning with a leg injury from international duty with Nigeria in November.
Earlier in January, the club said the 24-year-old suffered a “small setback” in his recovery. Alonso on Thursday confirmed Boniface was still a few games away from returning.
“He needs a bit more time. We need to be patient in order to get him back and at his best,” said Alonso.
Alonso said he “didn’t know” if Boniface would return for next week’s games against Mainz and Borussia Moenchengladbach, but added he would “normally not” be back given the nature of the injury.
Boniface has six goals and an assist in 10 league games this season.
Leverkusen could also be without midfield enforcer Xhaka for their visit to Dortmund because of an ankle complaint.
“We will make a decision. We need a bit more time with Granit,” said Alonso.
“We’re hopeful and there’s still time — more than 24 hours — but we need to wait. We’ll see if he’s there tomorrow.”
Leverkusen, who won a league and cup double while going unbeaten domestically last season, sit in second spot in the Bundesliga this campaign, four points behind leaders Bayern Munich.
