New kit unveiled as part of 75th anniversary celebrations
Birkirkara president Michael Valenzia wants his players to show more consistency as the Stripes look to put on a strong challenge for the main honours in Maltese football in what is a special year for the club.
This year, the Stripes are celebrating 75 years since their foundation and for the occasion the club have decided to launch a new kit that will feature the original colours of the club – green and yellow.
Speaking during the kit launching president Valenzia said that the whole idea behind this initiative is to return back to the club’s roots and that is why the club decided to use their original colours for the new shirt that has been designed for the occasion.
“This year Birkirkara FC is celebrating its 75th anniversary since their club’s foundation and we have decided to return to our original colours – green and yellow,” Valenzia said.
“I would like to thank Clayton Schembri and our media team who were behind the design of the kit and the video content that we will be publishing on our social media.
“Such initiatives would not be possible without the support of many people, particularly our committee members who are working on a voluntary basis day and night to try and keep the club relevant.
“I’m also grateful to our sponsors as well as Nike and Intersport who are our technical sponsors and all other people who are helping the club.
“A special mention goes to former president Victor Zammit who managed to make Birkirkara FC a relevant club as well as his successors Joe Zammit, Adrian Delia, who still assists the club in legal matters and Frank Zarb.”
Gift for fans
Valenzia said that this shirt is a gift for the supporters and is a clear message that club has no plans to forget all that happened in the club in the past 75 years.
The new shirt is set to be used in today’s Meridianbet FA Trophy tie against Balzan.
Valenzia added that the shirt will be used for the next six months every time Birkirkara will be asked to change colours and is hopeful all fans will go out and buy this new shirt “because the club is of our supporters.”
Asked to comment on Birkirkara FC’s performances this season, which saw the team finish second in the Opening Round after having dominated the first part of the championship, Valenzia said that there were a lot of positives to take but made it clear that he wants the team to show more consistency.
“After all the changes we made during the summer, we certainly performed to our best in the first part of the Opening Round, winning nine and drawing one match from the opening ten matches, something that I doubt will be repeated in the Closing Round,” Valenzia said.
“Having finished second in the Opening Round we are already assured of being part of the championship play-offs should Floriana fail to finish on top and that is something we are looking forward to.
“One thing I want my team to improve is our consistency and that is something we are working on.
“During the past weeks, we have made some changes to the squad and I believe that Birkirkara will be able to challenge for the major honours.”
Birkirkara have parted ways with Seth Paintsil, Juan Jose Siafa Etoha and Maicon, who have now returned to his former club Naxxar Lions.
The Stripes have brought in Alex Alves and Jonathan Makoma while Malta defender Zach Muscat is currently training with the club.
Valenzia said that Muscat is looking to win a contract away from our shores but confirmed that should the player decide to continue his career in Malta, Birkirkara will surely consider to offer him a contract.
