Beppe Grillo and Claire Azzopardi emerged victorious in the 60m sprint events at Saturday’s Winter Championships, organized by Athletics Malta.
Despite challenging weather conditions, the competition proceeded as planned, featuring the highly anticipated sprint finals.
Grillo, who already holds the national 100m record, set a new personal best in the final, clocking 6.84 seconds. He was followed by Jacob El Aida Chaffrey (7.07) and Kurt Zahra (7.19), who completed the podium.
In the women’s race, Azzopardi narrowly edged out Thea Parnis Coleiro, winning by just two milliseconds with a time of 7.75. Coleiro, who finished second in 7.77, had set a new national record of 7.70 in this event last month. Alessia Cristina secured third place with a time of 8.05.

Coleiro also excelled in other events, winning both the long jump and the 300m race, the latter with a personal best of 40.66.
In the men’s 300m, Graham Pellegrini claimed victory with a time of 35.16.
Meanwhile, Romeo Flavio won the men’s long jump with a leap of 6.39m, and 600m national record holder Isaac Bonnici once again dominated his category.
Janet Richard secured first place in the women’s 600m race, crossing the finish line in 1:31.43.
Pembroke Athleta’s Michael Debattista Segond clinched top position in the 1000m race in 2:34.40, followed by Jean Paul Debono of Żurrieq Wolves and La Salle’s Julian Zarb.
In the same race, a new U-16’s national record was set by 14-year-old Matteo Gauci of La Salle (pending ratification by Athletics Malta), after crossing the line in 2:42.93.
Sophie Cassar Torreggiani, in a time of 3:14.95 delivered Pembroke Athleta another 1000m win, this time in the female category.
