Maltese lifters set for unique SBD Malta Cup on March 9

Maltese lifters have the opportunity to take part in a unique competition at the Corradino Sports Pavilion next month.

In honour of the first year of SBD Apparel’s retail presence in Malta, the SBD Malta Cup was established to highlight the achievements of Maltese athletes and provide a platform for record-breaking performances.

This groundbreaking event will bring together the island’s top weightlifting and powerlifting athletes for a thrilling combined competition on March 9.

Athletes will compete head-to-head across both disciplines, vying to be crowned the 2025 SBD Malta Cup champion in their respective disciplines.

The overall rankings and winners will be determined by comparing each lifter’s total with the national record for their weight class, based on the national records of the Malta Powerlifting Association and Malta Weightlifting Association as of the day before the event.

Just to cite an example, if Lifter A achieves a total of 580kg in the men’s 66kg class, where the national record total is 555kg, the athlete’s score will be 104.5%.

On the other hand, if Lifter B totals 330kg in the women’s 76kg class, where the national record total is 300kg, the score will be 110%, placing her ahead of Lifter A.

This unique scoring system ensures a fair and exciting competition, pushing athletes to surpass their limits and aim for record-breaking performances.

In a statement, the organisers said: “The SBD Malta Cup promises to elevate the level of competition like never before seen on our shores.

“To support this vision, the event will feature a dedicated prizefund for the winning athletes, rewarding their dedication and excellence.

“Adding to the excitement, the event will be announced by Joe Whiteley, a world-renowned announcer for IPF World Championships and SBD Sheffield events.”
