Three Maltese lifters recently competed at the World Weightlifting Championships held in Forde, Norway.
Roberta Tabone and Tenishia Thornton took part in the 69kg category.
Tabone was the first to step on stage and opened strongly in the snatch, successfully lifting 84kg, 86kg, and 88kg.
In the clean and jerk, she managed a solid 109kg but narrowly missed her attempt at 112kg. With a total of 197kg, she placed second in her group.
Tenishia Thornton, who is currently recovering from injury, attempted her first snatch at 100kg but was unable to complete the lift.
Unfortunately, she had to withdraw from the competition due to pain.
The team remains optimistic for her quick recovery, with hopes she will return to full strength for the upcoming European Junior Championships in three weeks’ time.
Rylee Borg was the final Maltese athlete to compete.
In the snatch, he successfully lifted 117kg and 120kg but missed his final attempt at 123kg. In the clean and jerk, he managed 153kg and 156kg before falling short on 160kg. His combined total of 276kg earned him fifth place in his group.
This competition was an important milestone for the Maltese athletes, as it also served as a qualification event for the upcoming Commonwealth Games.
The participation of the Maltese team was made possible through the support of the Maltese Olympic Committee and SportMalta.
