A team from the Malta Weightlifting Association delivered an outstanding performance at the London Open, held at Crystal Palace, achieving several podium finishes and setting new national records.
In the opening competition, Kim Camilleri Lagana and Aaliyah Gatt both impressed. Camilleri Lagana claimed the gold medal with a total lift of 159kg, while Gatt secured the bronze medal with a strong total of 155kg.
In the following competition, Nathaniel Fenech added to Malta’s medal tally by winning bronze with a total of 216kg. Luke Stefan Micallef then produced an exceptional performance, successfully completing all six lifts (6/6) to win the gold medal with a total of 207kg. Micallef also set new Maltese national records in the 65kg category, recording 118kg in the Clean and Jerk and a new total record.
In the final competition, the youngest member of the Maltese team, Nathan Mifsud, showcased remarkable composure and strength. He completed all six lifts to claim the gold medal with a total of 201kg.
Unfortunately, Rylee Borg and Tenishia Thornton were forced to withdraw from the competition as they continue their recovery from injury.
The Malta Weightlifting Association extends its sincere gratitude to the Maltese Olympic Committee and SportMalta for their continuous support, which played a vital role in the success of this competition
