BIRKIRKARA 2-0 HIBERNIANS
Leandro Lacunza 37, Yikpe Gnamien 82
Birkirkara secured a crucial 2-0 victory over Hibernians to move level on points with Marsaxlokk at the top of the Premier League.
Stefano De Angelis’ side now lead the standings with 15 points, while Hibernians remain on 12, still in contention for a Top Six spot.
Hibernians started brighter, with Alex Bruno attempting an early effort that sailed wide of Giacomo Volpe’s goal.
Despite this, Birkirkara quickly took control of the match, dominating possession while Hibernians adopted a more cautious approach, waiting to capitalize on errors.
Lucas Villela nearly stunned Volpe with a powerful long-range strike, but the Birkirkara goalkeeper was equal to the task.
It was Birkirkara who broke the deadlock, making their dominance count. Ignacio Morello delivered a precise cross into the box, which Leandro Lacunza met with a superb volley to beat Pablo Sanchez, putting the Stripes ahead.
Lacunza came close to doubling the lead shortly after, but his effort struck the woodwork before Alex Alves fired the rebound wide from close range.
Early in the second half, Birkirkara were forced into a change as captain Alexander Satariano limped off injured, with Shaun Dimech coming on.
Hibernians responded through Bruno, but his effort lacked precision.
Paul Mbong then tested Sanchez, but his shot was comfortably saved. Maxuell also came close for Birkirkara but failed to find the net.
Alessandro Coppola made a crucial goal-line clearance to deny Villela’s header, keeping Birkirkara in front.
Despite Hibernians’ pressure, it was Birkirkara who struck again. Kurt Shaw’s mistake in midfield allowed substitute Yikpe Ghamien to pounce and seal the win with a well-taken finish.
