60 countries unite for 460th anniversary of Great Siege at La Valette Marathon

By Alexandra Bondi

With 14 days to go, the La Valette Marathon is set to welcome participants from 60 countries, 528 states, and 925 cities – highlighting its growing global appeal and solidifying Malta’s reputation as an unparalleled running destination.

Recognised as the island’s most scenic marathon route, La Valette Marathon continues to attract both elite and amateur runners who seek to experience a race that blends endurance with breathtaking coastal and historic landscapes.

This year’s edition carries even greater significance, commemorating the 460th anniversary of the Great Siege victory led by Grandmaster Jean Parisot de Valette.

More than a race, it is a testament to resilience, unity, and the timeless spirit of Malta, drawing running enthusiasts eager to experience 7,000 years of history firsthand.

Adding to the excitement, 2024 Olympic marathon runner Julia Mayer will be competing in this year’s race, returning after previously running the La Valette Marathon before her victory in Paris.

Mayer, who represented Austria in the Paris Olympics, finished with a time of 2:31:19, showcasing her endurance on the global stage and now joins the La Valette Marathon to take on its historic course.

Her participation reinforces the marathon’s rising international prestige, as more elite athletes recognize it as a standout event on the global running calendar.

The La Valette Marathon is the only AIMS-certified marathon in Malta and Gozo and holds official recognition from World Athletics and Abbott World Marathon Majors.

A Race That Embodies Strength and Legacy

Matthew Pace, founder of the La Valette Marathon, highlighted the significance of this milestone.

“In honour of this historic occasion, each finisher will receive a commemorative medal designed to symbolize Malta’s enduring legacy,” Pace said.

“The medal features the 8-pointed cross, representing courage and resilience, elements from the shield of La Valette, honouring both the Grand Master and the marathon’s heritage, an intricate Maltese tile design, reflecting the island’s craftsmanship and the La Valette Marathon logo, signifying the remarkable journey of every participant.”

“This medal is more than just a reward – it is a piece of history, a tribute to the resilience that defines Malta, and a symbol of the incredible journey each runner undertakes.”

The 42KM route offers an immersive experience through Malta’s cultural and historical landmarks, including the Valletta Triton Fountain, Fort St Elmo, and Fort St Angelo, culminating at the stunning Grand Harbour in Vittoriosa – where Malta once stood victorious.

As La Valette Marathon continues to gain international recognition, this 460th-anniversary edition promises to be the most inspiring yet, bringing together runners from across the globe to celebrate history, endurance, and the unparalleled beauty of Malta’s most scenic marathon.
