Antonella Chouhal has been appointed as a World Athletics referee for the European Throwing Cup, which is being held in Nicosia, Cyprus. This prestigious appointment marks the first time a Maltese official will be refereeing at the highest European level.
As a referee, Chouhal is leading a team of officials overseeing specific events at the competition, ensuring that all aspects of the throwing disciplines are conducted in accordance with European Athletics regulations.
Her selection reflects both her expertise in the field and the recognition of her technical skills at an international level.
This appointment follows her role as a Technical Delegate at last yearās Silver Challenger Meeting, further solidifying her position among Europeās top athletics officials.
Back in 2023, Chouhal achieved the prestigious Silver-Level Referee certification after successfully completing the necessary coursework and examinations organised by World Athletics.
This milestone makes her the first Maltese official to attain this qualification, which allows her to officiate at top international athletics events, including the Olympic Games, World Championships, Diamond League, and World Athletics Continental Tour.
Silver-Level Referees, the second-highest international recognition for athletics officials, are subject to ongoing evaluations by World Athletics to ensure they maintain the highest level of technical knowledge. The certification is valid for eight years.
Chouhalās selection for the European Throwing Cup highlights her growing reputation in the officiating community and marks another significant step for Maltese athletics internationally.
