Malta’s artistic gymnasts wrapped up the opening day of competition in some style when they secured the gold medal in the team event, a first in the history of the sport in the history of the Games.
Added to that, Sophie St John took a silver medal in the all-around event while Philippa Busuttil completed the set with a bronze medal in the same event.
It was a stunning effort from the Maltese gymnasts, who despite being a mix of young athletes and others with more experience they blended splendidly to go on and top the standings of the team event with a stunning score of 138.250 to finish well ahead of Iceland (136.400) and Luxembourg (135.050).
Apart from Busuttil and St John, the Maltese artistic gymnastics team was also formed by Janet Galea, Julia Galea, and Lyana Curmi.
The five Maltese gymnasts now have the chance to add more medals today when they will be involved in different apparatus finals, with the chance of making it a more memorable participation for the Malta Gymnastics Federation.
Busuttil is set to feature in the Uneven Bars final, where she is currently fifth overall.
But her best chance of a medal is in the Balance Beam, where she is leading the way on 12.100 ahead of team-mate St John, who is on 11.900.
Janet Galea is also in the battle for a medal in the Balance Beam as she is sharing third spot with Valentina Marochi, of Luxembourg, who scored 11.750 points.
On the other hand, Julia Galea is engaged in a battle for bronze in the Vault as she finished the day level on points with Cypriot Eleana Panagiotou, who is currently sitting in a bronze medal position on 12.150.
St John is just behind in sixth place on 12.100.
In the floor exercise, Malta have three gymnasts in a battle for a place on the podium as Sophie St John is second on 12.300 while Julia Galea is fourth on 11.950 and Janet Galea behind here on 11.750.
