Ħamrun Spartans part ways with coach Winston Muscat

Winston Muscat is not going to be in charge of Ħamrun Spartans next season after the veteran coach reached an agreement with the Malta champions to go their separate ways.

Muscat arrived at Ħamrun Spartans in March when he replaced Alessandro Zinnari, who was sacked as first-team coach following a run of poor results.

The former Marsaxlokk coach had a tough job on his hands to try and revitalise the Spartans’ title challenge.

However, Muscat, aided by his assistant Stephen Grima, managed to steady the ship and help the team reach the Top Six and then the Final Four.

Here, Muscat and his technical staff delivered the goods as Ħamrun Spartans first knocked out Floriana in the semi-finals before completing the job with victory over Birkirkara 1-0 in the final as the Spartans retained the title for a third successive season.

Despite this success, Ħamrun Spartans president Joseph Portelli and his administration decided to find a new coach at the helm and informed Muscat of their decision in a meeting this week.

This will be the third successive season that Ħamrun Spartans have decided to change their head coach at the end of the campaign, with Branko Nisevic and Luciano Zauri also suffering the same fate.

During the past weeks there have been a lot of rumours swirling around the post of Ħamrun Spartans head coach with Nisevic, whose contract at Hibernians expired at the end of the season, linked with a return to his former club.

However, it is understood that the Spartans are looking for a new foreign coach and an appointment could be announced in the coming days.
