Matthew Galea Soler set a new national record in the 400 metres at the University Games that are currently being held in Rhine-Ruhr in Germany.
The Maltese sprinter is one of seven track and field athletes who are representing our country in the Games.
In the men’s 400m, Galea Soler produced a strong run in the heats which saw him finish third overall with a time of 46.82 seconds.
His effort was a mere 0.01 second faster than the previous national best held by Graham Pellegrini, who had set the standard during the 2023 Games of the Small States of Europe that was held in Malta.
Apart from breaking the senior national record, Galea’s time is also a national best in the U-20 and U-23 categories.
In the end, Galea Soler finished tenth overall to progress to the semi-finals.
In the women’s category, Martha Spiteri was also in action in the heats and finished eighth with a time of 56.60 seconds… 0.5 seconds slower than the national best held by Janet Richard.
Jordan Pace was seventh in the 400 metres hurdles race with a time of 55.43 seconds.
