European Week of Sport launched

SportMalta officially launched the European Week of Sport this week during an event attended by local media, community representatives, and sport enthusiasts at the Sala Teddy Borg, in the Cottonera Sport Complex,

The main guest of the event was Clifton Grima, Minister for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation, who also took the opportunity to visit the ongoing Summer on the Move programme, highlighting the importance of physical activity for children and young people across the country.

Summer on the Move is a nationwide initiative aimed at encouraging young people to engage in regular physical activity during the summer months.

Through accessible and fun sporting activities, the programme promotes healthy lifestyles, community participation, and social engagement, providing children with opportunities to stay active and build new skills in a safe and inclusive environment.

During his visit, Dr Grima observed various activities and interacted with participants, praising the programme for its role in fostering healthy habits and strengthening community ties.

Rose Marie Mercieca, coordinator for the European Week of Sport, invited the public for the Main National event, which will be held on Saturday, September 27, at the Kirkop Sports Complex from 11am onwards and the #BeActive Night to be held at the same location from 6pm.

SportMalta chairman Matthew Pisani emphasised the importance of being physically active throughout the year and taking opportunities like these to push ourselves to try new fitness activities.

The launch also marked the introduction of this year’s theme for the European Week of Sport, an EU-wide campaign celebrating sport, physical activity, and well-being.

The initiative encourages people of all ages and abilities to embrace an active lifestyle through a series of events, workshops, and challenges taking place across Malta and Europe throughout the week.

SportMalta also presented the ambassadors of this year’s campaign, Maja Ruzicic, Katryna Esposito, Sasha Gatt and Gianluca Chetcuti, who will help inspire participation and raise awareness of the benefits of regular physical activity.

Speaking at the launch, Minister Grima emphasised the importance of sport in education, health, and community development, noting that initiatives such as Summer on the Move and the European Week of Sport play a key role in promoting active and inclusive societies.

The launch concluded with an overview of the week’s planned activities, which include a mix of sporting events, community challenges, and awareness campaigns aimed at encouraging everyone to embrace a more active lifestyle.

In a statement, SportMalta said that it looked forward to a week filled with energy, participation, and engagement, reinforcing the message that sport is for everyone and that physical activity is an essential part of a healthy life.
