Prime Minister Robert Abela inaugurated the third and final phase of the Marsa Sports Complex.
The Marsa Sports Complex project consisted of three phases: a sports facility to host gymnastics and other disciplines, a regeneration project for a historical building, and a sports centre dedicated to weightlifting, squash, netball, and fitness disciplines.
In a statement, the government said that this investment has exceeded the €16 million mark.
The Sports Complex comprises three storeys and features new courts for squash, a weightlifting centre, and a state-of-the-art fitness centre, developed in partnership with a private entity.
The Prime Minister said that through these facilities, the sporting communities can enjoy a modern and professional environment with top training facilities that can help the development of athletes and host competitions.
“This sporting investment will continue to put Malta on the international map of sports competitions,” Dr Abela said.
“Next year, Malta will be hosting the Youth Commonwealth Games, with the participation of 74 countries. Events of such stature have been awarded to our country thanks to such an investment that puts Malta on the sporting map.
“The Youth Commonwealth Games will be the biggest sporting event ever hosted by Malta.”
Dr Abella said that investment in the sporting sector forms part of a wider vision through which the government is putting sport as one of the main pillars of our society by promoting better health, discipline, teamwork, and a great sense of community.
On his part, Dr Clifton Grima, the Minister for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation, spoke about the work being carried out in Maltese sport.
He said that during the past few years, a lot of investment has been made and this will continue to ensure that new standards are reached.
“New infrastructure and the regeneration of sporting facilities are providing better opportunities for our athletes to have better preparation for their competitions,” he said.
“This work is helping our country to become a sporting centre that can host top international events, while also providing the best possible venues for our athletes.”
Mark Cutajar, SportMalta’s chief executive, emphasised that his entity has transformed the sporting facilities in Marsa into top-level venues that can serve associations and clubs and can host international events, as well as physical activity for the community in general.”
