Għaqda Ġurnalisti Sport dissociates itself from its president’s ‘political’ comments

Malta’s association of sports journalists (MSJA) has dissociated itself from comments made by its own president over the weekend.

In a statement issued on Monday evening, the Malta Sports Journalists Association said it was a non-partisan organisation that remained “strictly neutral on political issues”.

“The MSJA respects every person’s right to express their personal opinion, including members and officials of the association. However, those opinions do not necessarily represent the association’s official position,” it said.

The statement comes after association president Antvin Monseigneur spoke at a Labour Party event on Sunday.

Monseigneur introduced himself as a representative of the MJSA before going on to offer a glowing endorsement of Robert Abela, saying the Labour leader and prime minister “is a guarantee for your traditions.”

The association president described a recent motion by the Opposition to introduce constitutional protections for the environment as “pure madness” and claimed that it would also pose a threat to sports journalism.
