Gozo Dream Yacht Racing Team makes history at Barcolana Regatta

Another unexpected but hard-fought result has been achieved by Gozo Dream Yacht Racing Team in the Barcolana 57 held in the Gulf of Trieste this month.

The Barcolana is probably the largest race in the world, and this year it saw none other than 1,860 boats crossing the start line.

Gazo Dream finished the race second in the Cruiser Class and 40th overall on corrected time, making it the first ever Maltese boat to take a podium in this very crowded, prestigious race.

Skipper Noel Grech thanked the crew who, without their professional commitment, such a fine result would not have been possible.

Grech remarked that making a good start through such congestion in a light wind and many other professionally crewed boats was very complicated.

“The satisfaction of seeing hundreds of boats behind you over a five-mark inshore racing course cannot be explained,” Grech said.

“Naturally, the race gets even more technical as boats compete harshly for positions both between the marks but more strongly on the marks.”

Grech said he had quite a few of these, but he avoided any collisions or penalties.

In a statement, the Gozo Dream was grateful for the support of VisitMalta, Country Terrace Restaurant, Mġarr Marina,  and Provicario.

Gozo Dream is already vying for the next International Regatta, most probably in a Western Mediterranean location.

A great team with all the qualities of Eorld Class Sailing. Pity there are no facilities for the future generations in Gozo.
