Gabriel Farrugia and Roberta Schembri set the pace in the opening race of the National Road Running League, securing commanding victories in Marsascala.
The 10km race, hosted by Pembroke Athleta, with over 230 athletes taking part, marked the first of six events in this season’s series by Athletics Malta.
Representing Żurrieq Wolves in his first official race with the club, Farrugia clocked an impressive 31:46 to take first place, followed by Evolve Endurance Club’s Aidan Tanti (32:01) and Charlton Debono (33:00).
In the women’s category, Evolve’s Roberta Schembri delivered a dominant performance, finishing in 37:48, well ahead of Pembroke Athleta’s Rosalie Borg Cauchi (39:38) and Żurrieq’s Isaura Camilleri (39:59).
Following these results, Żurrieq Wolves AC take the early lead in the male team classification, followed by Evolve Endurance Club and Mellieħa AC in third.
Among the women, Pembroke Athleta started off with a narrow one-point lead over Evolve Endurance Club, setting the stage for a tightly-fought championship.
Meanwhile, in the newly introduced Mixed Team Classification, Żurrieq Wolves lead over Evolve and Mellieħa.
The league will resume on November 9, with a 5km race hosted by La Salle AC in the locality of Żabbar.
