EquestriMalta, the Malta Racing Club and the Malta Equidrome will be holding the first two finals of the 2026 racing season during Sunday’s meeting at the Marsa Racetrack.
With the new season set to commence with a double racing programme over the coming weekend, the EquestriMalta Grand Final returns with two finals.
One will see the top four horses from each of the Copper, Bronze and Silver categories racing against each other, whilst the second one will see the top six Gold category horses racing against the top six Premier category horses.
These two finals will stand as two top-tier events celebrating the transition into the new year.
The two invitational finals will feature as the fifth and eighth races on the card. Each final will include 12 participants, all invited on the basis of their ranking in the Malta Racing Club Best Trotter classification, as finalised on December 28, 2025.
This year marks the third consecutive season in which EquestriMalta has provided all the financial package backing these prestigious finals, once again contributing a record-breaking prize fund as well as awarding the winners with the renowned artistic trophy unveiled last year.
Speaking at the press conference, Max Zammit, CEO of EquestriMalta, expressed his enthusiasm for once again supporting the season-opening Grand Final, building on the success achieved in previous years.
He reiterated EquestriMalta’s commitment to ensuring that these finals continue to attract the very best horses competing in Malta.
In this regard, EquestriMalta has further increased the prize money, which now totals approximately €13,000. Mr Zammit also highlighted the use of the standing start, which adds an extra competitive dimension by allowing top-performing horses from different categories to compete against one another on equal footing.
Dr Matthew Brincat, CEO of the Malta Equidrome, thanked Zammit for EquestriMalta’s continued support of the event and extended his best wishes for the new year to all horse-racing enthusiasts.
While congratulating the participants, he encouraged fans of the sport to attend these opening race meetings of the year, which will be crowned by these unique Grand Finals.
Tony Demanuele, vice-chairman of the Malta Racing Club, congratulated all the finalists and praised their efforts throughout the past year. He commended the owners and drivers for their ability to keep their horses in peak condition and competitive form over an entire season, noting the consistency, dedication and resilience required to achieve such results.
