Agreement aimed at supporting athletes’ education and career development
The Authority for Integrity in Maltese Sport (AIMS) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with GIOYA Higher Education Institution.
The agreement is aimed at establishing a framework of collaboration to support the educational and professional development of athletes and sport professionals in Malta.
#The agreement was signed by Kevin Azzopardi, Chief Executive Officer of AIMS, and by Francesco Cappè on behalf of GIOYA Higher Education Institution.
The collaboration creates new opportunities for individuals affiliated with AIMS to access higher education pathways while promoting the values of integrity, ethics, and good governance in sport.
Under this agreement, eligible candidates will have access to the Bachelor in International Business Administration and Entrepreneurship offered by GIOYA HEI. Through a scholarship scheme promoted by AIMS, selected athletes and sport professionals may benefit from a 20% reduction in membership-related fees associated with the programme.
“The initiative also recognises the valuable skills and competencies developed in the sporting environment,” AIMS said in a statement.
“Through GIOYA HEI’s recognition of prior learning (RPL) system, relevant professional and athletic experience may be assessed and converted into academic credits in accordance with national regulations. This mechanism is designed to facilitate flexible access to higher education while acknowledging leadership, discipline, and professional experience gained through sport.”
In addition to academic pathways, the agreement provides for joint initiatives such as seminars, workshops, and lectures focusing on sport integrity, ethical leadership, and good governance in sport.
These activities aim to strengthen awareness and reinforce the role of education in promoting fair play and responsible leadership within the sporting community.
The agreement will remain in force for three years, during which both institutions will collaborate to promote the programme within the sporting community and support candidates who wish to pursue academic development alongside their sporting careers.
AIMS said this partnership reflects a shared commitment by both institutions to empower athletes and sport professionals with the knowledge, skills, and ethical foundations necessary for successful careers both within and beyond the sporting world.
