Juventus hire Carnevali as CEO after Comolli exit

Comolli has been sacrificed by Juve after just a season due to clashes over transfers with coach Luciano Spalletti.

Juventus have hired Giovanni Carnevali, a key figure in the success of tiny Sassuolo, as CEO and general manager following the departure of Damien Comolli after a poor season.

After a board meeting on Friday, Juventus said Frenchman Comolli, a former sporting director at both Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur and ex-president of Toulouse, “concludes his tenure with Juventus by mutual agreement”.

In Comolli’s place arrives 65-year-old Carnevali, whose leading role in player development and trading as CEO since 2014 has made Sassuolo a near fixture in Serie A.

“I am proud and honoured to join a club with such a rich history and strong identity,” said Carnevali.

“Together with all areas of the organisation, we will work to ensure that Juventus continues to be a leading force at both national and international level.”

Comolli has been sacrificed by Juve after just a season due to clashes over transfers with coach Luciano Spalletti, who was given a contract extension until 2028 in April, and disappointing performances both in Serie A and Europe.

Spalletti had been hired to secure a Champions League place following the sacking of Igor Tudor in October, but the Turin giants finished sixth and will play in the Europa League.

Juve were eliminated from last year’s Champions League at the play-offs by Galatasary, 7-5 on aggregate.
