The sixth edition of the European Week of Sport got underway with the Main National Event organized by SportMalta at the Kirkop Sport Complex between Friday and Saturday.
The event focused on a number of team and individual sport competitions in collaboration with their respective national clubs and associations.
The event included the following sport, namely an U-13 football tournament, a 3×3 basketball event, a volleyball competition held over two days, an open weightlifting championship, judo training sessions with the participation of various judokas including the national team, and mini moto.
There was also go karting, an exhibition of drag racing, snooker, line dancing with over 100 dancers involved, gymnastics by the SportMalta academy, badminton, table tennis exhibition matches, a ladies and male handball tournament, a table football competition, mini polo for U-11 kids and indoor rowing.
For the first time the event also included an eSport football tournament.
There were also activities organized through Special Olympics Malta including bowls.
Sessions of aqua fitness were also held.
All participants were given various freebies with the BeActive logos that included towels, backpacks, bottles, face masks, t-shirts and more to be used throughout the year, Parliamentary Secretary for Sport, Clifton Grima visited the event along with Mark Cutajar, chief executive officer of SportMalta.
Grima said that he was impressed with the organisation and participation and this encourages SportMalta to work more.
The Parliamentary Secretary thanked SportMalta employees for their commitment.
On his part, Cutajar said that although these events happened behind closed doors the participation was excellent and there was good collaboration between the entity, in particular the events department, the Kirkop and Cottonera employees, Secretariat for Sport, associations, St Benedict College and the Public Health authorities for this event to be a success in the current circumstances.
The next event will be the BeActive night that will be organized on September 26 at the Cottonera Sport Complex.
The event will be a one-night activity with 16 local personalities battling each other through fitness exercises. The BeActive Night will be transmitted live on TVM 2 at 20:45.
