French Caid De Bengale won Sunday’s major event at the Marsa Racetrack. This was a class Premier race on a long distance of 2640m and formed part of the 27th meeting of the season made up of ten races all for trotters.
Eleven trotters lined up for the class Premier race.
It was Velten Limelight (Cliferty Calleja) the fastest horse at first, opening a small lead from Brin De Noblesse (Tony Tanti) and Classic Haufor (Paul Galea).
However, Calleja’s trotter started to slow down with 300m to go. It was reeled in by Caid De Bengale (Ivan Stivala) which registered its first win of the season after sustaining the challenge of Jefferson Dotcom (Rodney Gatt) in the final straight.
Later on, Jefferson Dotcom was also disqualified and Velten Limelight was awarded second place from Cutty Sark (Eman Attard) and Dzarof De Guez (Cherise Farrugia).
The winner had an average time of 1.16.8” per kilometre.
Sunday’s card also included two class Gold races on the same distance.
In the first class Gold race, Ami (Noel Baldacchino), which took the lead 700m from the finishing line was eventually overtaken in the final straight by Caid De Laprelle (Paul Galea) which gained its first win in Malta from Belgian newcomer Kadabra Bolets (Kurt Saliba).
Ami had to settle for third place from Gringo Boko (Charles Camilleri).
There was a keen duel between Colvert d’Herfraie (Noel Baldacchino) and the early leader, Casino d’Ourville, in the final straight of the second class Gold race.
It was the former which took its first win in Malta with Xceed G.T. (Clint Vassallo) and Deal On Line (Paul Galea) following behind in that order.
Another meeting at the Marsa Racetrack will be held next Friday. The first race should start at 7pm.
