Sliema Wanderers have confirmed the appointment of Paul Zammit as their new coach for the 2022/2023 season.
The former Valletta and Birkirkara coach put pen to paper on a two-year contract with an option of extending his stay for another year.
Last month, the Times of Malta had revealed that the Blues were closing in on appointing Zammit as coach as they are striving to get back quickly to the top-flight following their first relegation since the 1983/1984 season.
The Times of Malta had reported that club president Keith Perry held a long meeting with Zammit and an agreement was almost reached between the two parties.
It is understood that Zammit will be spearheading a new technical project at the club that would put the team on a much stronger foundation for the future, giving a lot of importance to nurturing young talent.
For Zammit, the Sliema Wanderers experience will mark a return to competitive football just a couple of months after parting ways with Balzan FC towards the end of last season.
It is interesting to note that present for Paul Zammit’s presentation was Leli Fabri who boasts a significant place in the Wanderers youth system having nurtured so many youngsters at the club for many years.
In fact, it was Fabri himself who had brought Zammit to the club as a 14-year-old and mentored him for many years and it was Zammit’s wish that Fabri would be present for his return to the club.
Paul Zammit had a successful stint in the youth ranks of Sliema Wanderers as he managed to win all honours in the youth competitions and was also named player of the year of the Youth FA.
He went on to form part of the Sliema Wandererers senior team and managed to win the Premier League title with the club in season 1988-89.
Meanwhile, the Blues have already handed a professional contract to defender Luke Mifsud and brought in another defender in Miguel D’Alessandro who joins Sliema from Luxol St Andrews.
