Rhythmic gymnast Lauren Agius produced a commendable performance at the Luxembourg Greater Region & BeNelux Cup which was held earlier this month.
The 14-year-old Maltese gymnast was accompanied by coach Elena Vella as well as Noemi Dulzetto who acted as a judge during the competition that attracted the participation of athletes from Luxembourg, Cyprus and Germany.
Competing in the A Level Junior Category, Agius placed in third place in the hoops discipline after amassing a score of 18.600. Luxembourg’s Emilia Stasane won the gold medal with 24.650 while Elsa Drintcho, of Luxembourg, placed second on 18.950.
Germany’s Anastasia Barabanow finished behind Agius on 18.300
Agius also managed a second third placing in the Ribbon discipline when totalling 18.650 points. Stasane again placed first on 23.500 while Barabanow was second on 19.550.
She finished ahead of Drintcho (18.050) and Cypriot Vlada Golubina with 14.200.
The Ritmica Malta gymnast just missed out on a podium place in two other disciplines, namely in clubs and ball.
In the clubs leg, Agius totalled a score of 17.650 points while in ball she managed a score of 19.250.
In the overall standings, Agius scored 74.150 to place fourth, just behind third-placed Drintcho, who scored 75.050.
Agius was rewarded for her overall performance after placing third in the Small Nations Award of the junior category.
Agius is part of the Malta Youth Development programme of the Maltese Olympic Committee.
In Luxembourg, there were other Maltese gymnasts who earned podium placings.
Nadine Zammit placed first among Small States athletes in the 2016 A category while Emily Vella placed second in 2013 B class.
Estela Bezzina placed third overall in the 2014 C class while Eve Muscat took bronze among small states athletes in the 2017 category.
Chloe Cooper competed in the 2012 B category and registered 17.200 in Hoop.
Chezonelle Georgette Azzopardi received 17.950 in Hoop in the 2012 A class.
Mireille Grima placed fourth overall in the Junior B class, with her best result coming in the Ball when totalling 17.800 points.
Emma Fava also competed in the same class and recorded 16.600 in Hoop.
Mila Gauci, competing in the 2012 C category scored 11.417 in Hoop.
On the other hand, Valentina Bonello recorded 10.117 in Ball in the 2013 C category.
Ellie Caruana Smith registered 11.533 in the Floor section while fellow 2018 class athlete Bea Muscat registered 11.542 in the same discipline.
