Pieta Hotspurs etched their name in history by winning the first-ever edition of the BOV Challenge Cup.
In a thrilling final held at the Centenary Stadium, the Hotspurs secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Challenge League champions Valletta.
The BOV Challenge Cup is a new competition from the long-term collaboration between Bank of Valletta and the Malta Football Association.
All the teams in the BOV Challenge League compete in a knockout format, with Pieta emerging unbeaten and lifting the BOV Challenge Cup trophy.
The Hotspurs started on the offensive and took the initiative in the first minutes of the match.
However, it was Valletta who had two scoring chances in the first half but were denied by Pieta goalkeeper Reeves Cini before having an effort come off the woodwork.
The match came alive on 52 minutes when Pieta scored what proved to be the all-important goal as Kian Leonardi bundled the ball past Valletta goalkeeper Timothy Aquilina.
From then on, Valletta threw everything at the Pieta defence but could not find an equaliser as the Hotspurs held on for the win.
Stefan Abela, CSR Manager at Bank of Valletta, and Matthew Paris, the Malta FA vice president, presented the BOV Challenge Cup trophy to Pieta amidst the jubilation of the loyal Pieta fans at the Centenary Stadium.
