Watch: Sasha Gatt, and women’s 4x100m relay secure silver medals at the pool

Sasha Gatt won her second medal in the Andorra GSSE when she secured a silver medal in the 1,500 metres race.

Gatt, who on Tuesday stormed to the 800m title, was again engaged in a fiery duel with Monaco swimmer Lisa Pou.

But this time, the Monegasque showed her class as with 500 metres to go he moved clear of the Maltese swimmer to stroll home to victory in a new Championship record of 16:57.00.

Gatt was second in 17.04.06 while the bronze medal went to Luxembourg’s Lou Jominet.

“Unfortunately, today it was not to be as I missed out on the gold medal,” Gatt said.

“But I knew that it was not going to be easy, as I was facing a very strong opponent who specialises in open water swimming. I tried to be with her for as long as I could throughout the race, but in the last 500 metres she proved too strong.

“But still, I am very happy with my performance.”

Gatt has been a mainstay in the women’s swimming national team for six years now and she maintains that she has matured a lot over the years.

“It has been pretty a long journey now,” Gatt said.

“I started as a 13-year-old in the Montenegro GSSE and then won a silver medal in the home edition in Malta two years ago.

“This year, I finally won my first gold medal, and honestly, it has been a very overwhelming experience, and I am so thankful for all the support that I have received.

“I surely matured a lot both as a person and as a swimmer, and my progress would not have been possible without the guidance of my coach and the support of my coach and my team-mates and hopefully there is more to come from me.”

The Maltese swimmers won their second medal of the day in the 4x100m women’s relay as Victoria Balderacchi, Zoe Cawsey, Nirvana Micallef,  and Michela Portelli touched home in second place in 4:21.66.

Iceland won the gold medal in 4.12.82 while Cyprus took bronze in 4:23.24.

In the 100m breaststroke, Malta’s Matthew Satariano finished in eighth place in the 100m breastroke, clocking 1:08.38. The gold medal was won by Iceland’s Einar Agustsson in 1:01.79.

A similar fate came for Andrei Enache in the men’s 200m freestyle, who could only finish in eighth place with 1:56.66. The gold medal was won by San Marino’s Matteo Oppioli in 1:50.92.

In yesterday’s last final the men’s 4x100m relay medley could only finish in seventh place clocking 4:03.79.
